How I Learned to Cook
Tarcher/Penguin
2003

To represent this collection of non-fiction stories written on the subject of troubled mother-daughter relationships, I wanted to hit just the right note of ominous nostalgia. On the front cover, I cropped the mother's head from an otherwise placid scene, and moved it to the spine for a touch of black humor. The stereotypically domestic pattern of red gingham and a recipe card shape on the back iterate expectations of normalcy, while the display typeface, Calvino Hand, emphasizes dysfunction. Printed in three spot colors: red, black and gray.
